- Monaco’s broadcaster Télé Monte-Carlo declined to host after winning in 1971, citing the lack of a suitable venue, technical limitations and costs, and with Spain and Germany also refusing, the BBC stepped in amid fears the contest could be cancelled; the event was ultimately staged in Edinburgh, the contest’s first (and only, as of 2026) time in Scotland and the UK’s first hosting outside London.
- 1972 introduced the contest’s first video wall (an Eidophor screen) and saw the only Irish-language entry.
